For many people, attending a job interview is a key stage in their working lives. Your first ever interview is likely to conjure up a mix of nervous excitement and apprehension as you hope that you will answer all questions confidently and demonstrate that you are suitable for the role. It is important to remember that in today’s highly competitive jobs market, most candidates will need to attend two or three interviews on average before landing a role. Whilst interviews can seem daunting for a lot of people, you can take several key steps to prepare for your interview that will improve your chances of becoming a successful applicant. This article explains three top tips that will help you to make a great first impression and give yourself the best chance of getting the job you want.

two or three interviews on average

Read the Documents Thoroughly

When you initially applied for the job in question, you will have almost certainly seen both the job description and the person specification in the supporting documents. Both are vital to reading thoroughly, as it is likely that they may form the basis of some of the questions that you are asked at an interview. Remember that the interview panel is not trying to “catch you out” with tricky questions. It is more that they are trying to allow you to demonstrate that you have the skills and knowledge to undertake the role advertised. It can, therefore, be wise to go through both documents and imagine you are the interviewer. Try to put yourself in their position and think about what questions you would ask to show that the skills and knowledge required can be met. It can also be beneficial to write short notes next to some of the skills and knowledge required that show how you meet these criteria.

Dress Smartly

A job interview is a formal occasion where, in most cases, you will be expected to dress appropriately. This means wearing business-like attire, such as a smart shirt and tie for men, with suitable trousers (not jeans). Women should wear a smart dress or a shirt and skirt combination, generally. You can find a range of smart clothing that is suitable for a job interview (and for undertaking the role if you are successful) at quality clothing outlets, such as burrowsandhare.co.uk. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to fully wash and groom yourself before dressing in suitable business attire. Remember that first impressions do count and looking professional and business-like is vital for most job interviews.

Think About What Questions to Ask

Whilst most questions will be directed at you by the interview panel, it is common that towards the end of the interview you may be asked if you have any questions of your own. This is another prime opportunity to demonstrate your interest in the role and you should think before the interview about the types of questions you wish to raise. Ideally, they should show the panel that you have fully considered the role and are enthusiastic about it. Consider enquiring about the long-term career development that the firm offers, as this will show the employer that you wish to spend considerable time within the company and are ambitious. Also, pay attention to the questions asked during the interview as you may find you want to explore some of these topics more deeply.
