The Smithsonian Castle is a magnificent red-brick building in Washington, DC’s Financial District. It is both a museum and the organization’s official headquarters, known as The Smithsonian Institution. The oldest structure on the National Mall, this castle was erected in 1855 by James Renwick Junior. It is also regarded as the most ancient building on campus, and in 2013 it was America’s most visited museum, with more than 7 million tourists. For example, during the year 2012 alone, 4.7 million people went to this location. James Renwick Junior created the Victorian Gothic style of architecture for the Castle. The Smithsonian Institution was established when English scientist James Smithson left his entire fortune to the United States of America, which was more than 500,000 dollars in 1835. On March 3rd, 1838, US President Andrew Jackson signed a congressional bill that created an acceptance act for this money and later used it to establish the Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian Castle is one of Renwick’s earliest projects and was finished in 1855. This structure was originally used as a museum for fossils, other specimens, and collections that would be exhibited there.

In 1930, the United States’ most popular museum – the Smithsonian Castle burned down after almost a century, destroying roughly 75% of all objects within it, including its structure. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1949, and its ruins were used as a parking lot for many years. In 1993, the castle was rebuilt following an earthquake that damaged much of the city. The Castle was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and later restored with significant rebuilding work conducted at the time, which helped to restore its façade.

Adults pay $16 for a regular admission ticket, while students pay $11 per adult ticket. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., on the half-hour, one of the National Firearms Collection’s walking tours is available, which includes a stop at the gallery to view class-3 weapons under NFA rules and regulations.
